THE ISLE OF WIGHT CYCLING FESTIVAL NEEDS YOU!
Are you passionate about your pushbike? Do you enjoy the breathtaking beauty of the Island’s natural wonders all from the saddle of your bike?
Are you free between the 15 and 23 September 2007?
Would you like to be a key member of the Island’s largest cycling event?
If any of the above apply to you why not join this year’s Isle of Wight Cycling Festival as a volunteer ride leader? Share your love of cycling with others as a volunteer guide on any number of routes during the Island’s rapidly growing annual cycle event – The Isle of Wight Cycling Festival (15-23 September, www.sunseaandcycling.com). Each day of the week-long festival will offer cyclists the opportunity to sample around 30 different cycling routes that will take in the most picturesque areas of the Island as well as local landmarks and the occasional country pub! Cyclists with good local knowledge are needed to lead those wishing to take part.
Claire Whittington, Isle of Wight Leisure Services department, said “The Isle of Wight Council took over as the main organisers of the Isle of Wight Cycling Festival in 2000 with the support of local cycling clubs and organisations. Working alongside Isle of Wight Tourism, their aim was to establish the Isle of Wight as a leading destination for cyclists, as well as providing a programme of events that would benefit the Island’s cycling community.
“The event has gone from strength to strength and we are now looking to increase our team of dedicated cycling enthusiasts, without whom the event would not be possible”.
As a ride leader you will be able to be a part of popular events such as ‘Cycle the Wight’, a 65 mile road race around the Island’s spectacular coastline, and ‘The Hills Killer’, a challenging orienteering ride set against the clock. All volunteers will receive a ‘leader’s pack’ with all the necessary information to lead a successful ride.
Another event being revived this year will be the humorous ‘Sink or Swim’ competition at Seaclose Park, Newport. As part of the festival’s launch day on Saturday 15 September, which will also include a fantastic free Cycle Show and mountain bike stunt display, spectators can watch as homemade pedal powered crafts attempt to make it across the River Medina without getting wet. The festival launch day takes place from 11am until 4pm.
As a ride leader you won’t be the only new addition to the Cycling Festival. For the super fit, two triathlons have been added to this year’s programme. The West Wight Triathlon:
a 35km cycle ride, a 600m pool swim and a gruelling 7.5km run (www.westwight.co.uk/triathlon) and the Wight Challenge: a 32km cycle ride, a 16km
run and a 4km open canoe race (www.wightchallenge.co.uk).
If this sounds like the kind of event you would like to be involved in don’t hesitate,
the Isle of Wight Cycling Festival needs you!

A complete programme of rides will be available on the website
(www.sunseaandcycling.com) and from the festival programme (available from Island
tourist information centers) in June.
