Go wild in the Lake District’s unspoilt Ennerdale valley this summer

  News

Canoeing, guided mountain walks, orienteering and woodland playdays are amongst the events on offer in the Lake District’s Wild Ennerdale valley this summer.

Beginning on 4th July, the summer season kicks off with a guided walk in the safest of hands - those of an experienced mountain rescue team member. The walk takes place from 10am - 4pm from Bowness Knott car park and is free, though booking is required on 07712 751060.

There will also be another opportunity to join a mountain walk on 18th July and 15th August from 10am – 4pm, this time from Bleach Green car park.

The unspoilt valley is the perfect place for an introduction to orienteering taster session which takes place on 5th July. Led by the West Cumberland Orienteering Club, the short simple courses will be an ideal introduction to the sport. The session begins at 6pm from Bowness Knott car park and costs £2 for adults and £1 for children.

The free roaming Galloway cattle of the Ennerdale valley are the focus of a walk on 11thJuly. Join Rachel, our Wild Ennerdale project officer for a guided walk up the valley to meet the cattle and learn more about how they are being used in a natural way to manage the landscape of the area. The walk takes place from 10.30am to 4pm from Bowness Knott car park and is free.

Gareth Browning, Forestry Commission Area Forester, said:

“Ennerdale really is a unique, special and spectacular valley to visit and the summer events inEnnerdale are a great way to explore one of the more untouched areas of the Lake District, have fun and also learn a little more about what we’re doing to manage it in a completely natural way.”

There’s a rare chance to see the valley from a new perspective on 31st July, by taking to the water with a wild canoeing session. The cost is £19.20 per person, and there are two 3 hour sessions available – book online at www.wildennerdale.co.uk.

Kids can run wild in the woods on 1st August with a forest based family nature adventure. There’ll be a short walk with games, activities, exploration, fun and learning along the way. The day begins at 10am from Bowness Knott car park and costs £6.00 for adults and £4.20 for children. Tickets are limited – book online at www.wildennerdale.co.uk.
