Now that Team GB are winning lots of gold medals, the nation is full of enthusiasm for sports and outdoor activities. The Media, British Government and Princes Harry and William have said that more work needs to be done to help youth to take up sport and outdoor leisure pursuits. Make yourself heard now about how you would like to see outdoor sport facilities developed. I think that Lord Coe, Boris Johnson, the Olympic Committee and everyone who has taken part in funding and organising London 2012 has done an amazing job. The facilities, the opening ceremony, the security, the transport system and the media coverage have been praiseworthy.
Although after four attempts I didn't manage to get any Olympic tickets, I did manage to get some to go to the Olympic Park and soak up the atmosphere. The only thing we were disappointed with was the Olympic shops at the park not having enough stock to sell. They had sold out of Tshirts in small and medium on Day 4 when we were there.
All in all, London 2012 is a fantastic success. What I hope is that the British Government puts ina similar amount of effort that has been spent on the Olympic Games on encouraging youth to be active. There are so many sports and outdoor activities that you can do, but the cost and limited facilities can be prohibitive. If you live in central London, the only rowing you can do is somewhere like Hyde Park.
So, please David Cameron, maintain the nation's enthusiasm and cheer by focussing on making sport and outdoor recreation affordable and accessible for youth. Lord Coe, Lord Moynihan and Tessa Jowell are already talking about it.
My Solution to getting more youth active
Instead of all of this talk, we need some action. My idea for a solution is for all activity and sports providers to open their doors on the May Day Bank Holiday weekend and August Bank Holiday weekend and give taster sessions with instruction for FREE. If the Government lead this initiative and subsidised the companies, then I am sure this would be a start in the right direction. Show youth what is on offer and let them have a try. If they like it, they will put in the effort to do more.
The National Trust did this earlier this year to boost visitors and encourage more under 10s to complete the 50 things to do before you're 10.
If you want to show the world you love being active outdoors, wear a beanie hat on the Active Outdoors Beanie Hat Day on 1st December.
Let me know what you would like to see the British Government (Sport England, Scotland and Wales) do for you to make sport and outdoor recreation accessible and affordable on the Active Outdoors Facebook page.
