Cycling is the New Cool

  News

Apparently, the richer people become, the further they cycle. So get on your bike and show off your style.
According to official figures from a Department for Transport travel survey, far from being the mode of transport for the poor, the wealthiest fifth of the population cycle on average 2 ½ times as far in a year as the poorest fifth. Despite being five time less likely to have a car to get around, the poorer population are unlikely to consider using a bike to get where they want to go.

The thinking is that the wealthier cyclists are doing so out of a health interest. Those who cycle regularly will gain a level of fitness that is the same as someone up to ten years younger. Those who cycle beyond their thirties increase their life expectancy.
There appears to be an image associated with cycling that is not appealing to the less well off. The absence of role models does not help. Footballers and pop stars are not often photographed riding a bike. Perhaps they should set an example and get out of their sports cars once in a while to enjoy the pleasure of cycling.

As kids, we nearly all have used a bike to get around. With the increase of traffic on the roads, it has become more dangerous to cycle on the roads. There are several cycle routes in some of the cities, but nowhere near the quantity of safe cycle paths that are required. If you try and get off the beaten track, you sometimes struggle to find a bridlepath. Unfortunately it is not permitted to cycle on public footpaths, but when there are no alternatives you have to use a road which is usually busy.

If you are fortunate enough to live deeper into the countryside, there are an abundance of mountain bike trails springing up all over the place. These are aimed at leisure pursuits and are a great way to spend your spare time. To burn your way along some single track mountain bike trails is seriously fun.

Wouldn't it be good if local councils could find a way to create off road cycle paths for people to get from a to b? I don't want to be sitting in a cycle lane at the edge of traffic. I want to be on a separate path isolated from cars.

If you know of a great place to go cycling, submit an article about it or post details to in the forum.
