2008 Fieldfare Kielder Challenge Gateway opens

Outdoor Events

Schools and youth groups up and down the country are being encouraged to enter teams into a national outdoor adventure competition – the 2008 Fieldfare Kielder Challenge.
The Challenge is open to teams of 13 to 16 year olds with and without physical, learning and sensory disabilities and provides opportunities for youngsters to compete in problem solving and team building games. Each team consists of eight youngsters - four with disabilities and four without.

The competition is in its 24th year and is organised by Fieldfare Trust, a leading UK outdoor access charity and supported by HSBC in the Community. The Challenge aims to develop teamwork and communication skills between teenagers in a countryside environment, which many inner city youngsters may not normally get the chance to do.

Access to the first stage of this year’s competition is through the Challenge Gateway, which will offer more youngsters than ever the opportunity to get involved in the competition. HSBC staff have volunteered to visit teams and run tailored Challenge games in the school or youth groups prior to the regional heats.

In April and May, a series of regional heats will take place at country parks right across the UK. Here the teams will compete against the clock and each other to try to win a place in the 2008 Fieldfare Kielder Challenge Grand Final on 24th to 28th September in Kielder Forest, Northumberland.

Peter Bull, manager of HSBC in the Community, is delighted to be involved in the competition. He commented: “The Challenge is a great opportunity for youngsters to integrate with other people with different abilities and disabilities.

“Team numbers are increasing year-on-year and I hope this year is no exception. I’m also very pleased that so many of our staff volunteer to support the competition too. This year we’ll have more than 200 helping out throughout all stages of the event.”
