Skid Pan Driving experiences are designed to give you the opportunity to experience what it is like to drive in icy and slippery conditions.
Skid pan driving comes in three forms. The most obvious is driving on ice and snow at a drive training track. The course is designed to allow you to improve your driving skills in icy driving conditions. The track is designed to ensure that the car remains contained within the boundaries of the track.
The second type of skid pan is on tarmac that has water sprayed across it. Most police forces have access to one of these, and often provide driving tuition to the public.
The third and most recent technical addition to skid pan driving is the skid cradle. The car or truck is mounted on top of the skid cradle. The skid cradle has large castor wheels on each corner. It is computer controlled from within the vehicle and allow the instructor to lift any of the four of the vehicles wheels of the ground. This means that the castor at that corner then comes into play and causes loss of control from that car wheel.
The skid pan cradle can simulate a variety of conditions where any of the vehicles wheels lose traction.
