News It's good news for hill walkers as the British Mountaineering Council (BMC) has appointed its first ever dedicated BMC hill walking development officer. The main aim of the new role is to provide information and advice to new hill walkers and to the many members for whom hill walking is their main activity.

Outdoor Events Get fit and fight poverty!

Trailwalker takes place on 14 – 15 July 2007

Trailwalker is a 100-kilometre trek for teams of four people with a 30-hour time limit. Anyone aged 18 or over can take part – from colleagues and clients, to pub quiz teams and siblings. Although the course record is less than 10 hours, most people take between 25 and 30 hours to finish – which doesn’t allow time for sleeping!

Making walking a regular part of children's everyday lives is a good way of counteracting this worrying trend, and they could still be reaping the benefits of a healthy, active lifestyle for many decades to come. The important thing is that walks need to be planned to suit the child's interests and abilities: don't expect them to enjoy walking or landscapes for their own sake in the way that many adults do.
